In brief: Swallowing air
Belching is merely the venting of gas from the stomach.
As the stomach is relatively sterile, nearly all the gas in the stomach is from swallowed air. Drinking sodas, drinking from straws or narrow mouthed bottles, washing food down with liquids, and eating quickly can all cause excessive air swallowing or aerophagia.
