In brief: Pain
The inner lining of the abdominal cavity is called the peritoneum.
It has an abundant supply of pain fibers and, when inflamed (peritonitis), will cause severe pain. This may be localized to one area of the abdomen or generalized throughout the abdominal cavity. The most common cause of peritonitis is from contents of the intestinal tract entering into the abdomen from a hole in the intestine.
