Is the appendix totally removed at the time of surgery?

In brief: Largely, yes....

In addition to dr. Rosen's response, there is an extremely small number of people reported that have had duplication of the appendix (i.
e. Two appendices). The "second" appendix is often located adjacent to the first, but could conceivably be overlooked at the time of surgery.

In brief: Yes...

...Or at least we hope so.
Once in a blue moon, someone may come in with a second case of appendicitis caused by a small amount of the appendix inadvertently left behind; this is called 'stump appendicitis'. Please be reassured that this is, by far, the exception.
