What causes a child to have gastroschisis?

Not really known. The cause of gastroschisis is not known, but there are certain statistical associations such as younger maternal age, alcohol consumption or smoking during pregnancy, & certain medications or infections. The incidence is increased in teen pregnancies, early prenatal exposure to alcohol drugs that constrict blood vessels, like Pseudoephedrine or cocaine, methamphetamine. & tobacco. Abdominal wall defects occur at 5-10 wks.' gestation, often , before pregnancy diagnosis.
