In brief: Meningococcal diseas

Prevention of the disease is more important.
A Meningococcal vaccine is now available for children aged 11 years and over- taken in 2 doses about 5 years apart. A new vaccine is also now available for infants given as early as 6 weeks of life. Treatment is usually extensive and includes IV fluids, antibiotics, steroids and other medications to maintain blood pressure.
