If a patient is committed to a psychiatric hospital for long-term care, what type of care would they receive?
Multidisciplinary. In long-term hospitalization, there are are multiple avenues of treatment, some of which depends on areas of interest or focus in a specfic hospital. In general, you can expect medication treatment, individual and group therapies, and various recreational and activity based therapies. Family therapy will also be used as needed.
Uncommon. Long term care is not a common practice. Most units are acute, and only offer a 3-7 day stay.
Comprehensive. The care provided to a patient in a long term facility is usually geared towards restoring that particular patient to full functioning either independently or with minimal supervision without any risk of harm to self and/ or to others.
