It is variable! I will assume that you are talking about the most common symptoms, such as hot flashes. Here are some facts: 1 80 percent will continue to have them for more than one year. 2. Menopause. Menopause is defined as the normal ending of the menstrual cycle after one year without a period. The ovaries stop producing eggs and hormones. So women can no longer conceive after menopause and decreasing hormone levels can cause symptoms of aging, hot flashes, mood changes, skin changes less libido and vaginal dryness. Symptoms can be treated with both traditional and natural approaches.
Hi, on average, how long does menopause last? Also, what can I do about menopause causing no libido :- (thank you! Marie
Varies. Menopause starts and ends differently for each women. The loss of estrogen and testosterone following menopause can lead to changes in a woman's sexual drive and functioning. During and after menopause, vaginal dryness can be treated with water-soluble lubricants such as k-y jelly. You can also talk to your doctor about vaginal estrogen therapy.
Decide. On whether you are willing to take hormone therapy. I use them a lot with my patients. Have your estrogen, Progesterone and testosterone tested. Make them use a mass spectrometer for the testosterone. If low then replace to normal levels. Just like you would if your thyroid was low. Also, sex drive derives from other physical, psychological, and spiritual aspects to libido. Talk to your gyn.
Menopause. Menopause is a slow transition that usually slowly initiates around age 35 and completes by age 55. It truly varies tremendously though. Often it follows genetic patterns. There are ways to limit the symptoms: ssris (eg lexapro, (escitalopram) prozac) limit the hot flashes & mood swings; bioidentical hormones & viagra treat loss of libido; exercise helps mood&sleep; estrogen cream treats vaginal driness.
Menopause Is Forever. In menopause the ovaries are permanently no longer producing both estrogen (estradiol) and progesterone, which are potent female hormones. Every cell in a woman's body has estrogen and Progesterone receptors, not just the reproductive system, so the entire body suffers once in menopause. Cyclic bhrt can help, libido included.

I. I am sorry that you are going through all of that. The average pre-menopause and menopause last anywhere from 2-6 years depending on the patient. I am not sure of your age. The average age of period cessation for women is 53-54. As yours has been going on for so long, seeing a gynecologist to discuss your symptoms and possible treatment would be a reasonable consideration. In addition, other causes of hair thinning, such as hypothyroidism, should be ruled out, though certainly hair does thin for some women through menopause.
