The safest and most commonly used gas is Nitrous Oxide. Other gases are available but create deeper sedation closer to general anesthesia. Nitrous oxide advantage is that it is easily breathed away in minutes and brings the patient back to normal.

In brief: Nitrous oxide

nitrous oxide is a gas that is automatically mixed with Oxygen and is the most common inhalational gas used in modern dentistry.
In the 1800-1900's they used ether and inhaled it on a towel until they passed out and were able to have the work done!

In brief: Laughing gas

Nitrous oxide commonly known as laughing gas is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax.
It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.
