In brief: Very often

Epidural anesthesia can be used often depending on the type of procedure that is planned.
It is safe and effective.

In brief: Very often

Epidurals are very commonly used these days.
However, they are most commonly used in pregnant females around the time of delivery, either with natural childbirth or a c-section. They are also used as an adjunct with a lot of chest surgeries and some abdominal surgeries, and some extremity surgeries. However, most abdomen/chest surgeries do require a general anesthetic in addition to the epidural.

In brief: Frequently

The simple answer is that they can have it as many times as they want.
Practically, the question is how often do you want a big needle in your back. The use of epidurals for multiple childbirths is common in the us. The use of epidurals for multiple operations as part of a regional technique is also fairly common. Hope this answers your question.

In brief: Many times

For many different procedures.
There is no limit to how many epidural anesthetics one can have. Also, epidural anesthesia can be used for any procedure that encompasses the lower abdomen and below. There are some places, esp in europe that use a thoracic epidural for cardiac bypass surgery.
