Epidural anesthesia may be used preferentially for more extensive prostate surgery. Narcotics and anesthesia may then be given automatically after surgery as a continuous "drip" through an epidural catheter left in place. This will decrease the need for IV narcotics for the day or two following the procedure. The catheter is removed painlessly afterwards.
