In brief: Gangrene Treatment
If it is in the early stages, then the foot can usually be salvaged, but time is of the essence.
The first steps would include assessing the arterial ciruculation of the leg w/ ultrasound, ct scan, or MRI of the arteries. This helps to determine the best treatment approach. Most common therapy: catheterization w/ angioplasty or stenting or surgical bypass of diseases arteries causing the gangrene.

In brief: Restoration of flow
Both previous answers to this question are correct.
The treatment will depend on the cause and location of the arterial blockage. Most commonly, this would involve diagnostic arteriography and the problem may be able to be addressed with angioplasty or stenting at the same time, or she might need a more invasive procedure with surgical bypass, or a combined procedure.

In brief: Ask the surgeon...
There are many causes for gangrene in the feet: diabetes, large vessel blockages, etc.
The treatment depends on the diagnosis and the anatomy involved for the specific patient. Ask your mother's vascular surgeon to outline the treatment options for her. If you are dissatisfied, get a second opinion.

In brief: Get circulation
Get circulation to the foot and treat the infection and remove the affected area.
If that does not work amputate to healthy tissue.
