In brief: Depends on details

Although minimally invasive techniques now exist that can allow many aortic aneurysms to be repaired with small or even no incision at all, the true answer depends on details -- where is the aneurysm located? Anatomy truly is destiny when deciding the appropriate treatment method.

In brief: Endovascular vs open

Your dad's ct scan will be determine whether the aneurysm can be fixed with minimally invasive surgery or traditional open surgery.
Also the usual size criteria for repair is an aneurysm over 5-5.5cm. Endovascular repair does require lifelong surveillance and has a 10% risk of re intervention that will be needed in the future. Your dad should meet with a vascular surgeon to discuss his options.
