How does pregnancy increase the risk of pulmonary and other emboli? What happens to your blood in pregnancy?

Thicker blood. Blood flow during pregnancy is diminished & hypercoagulable (thicker) during pregnancy especially in the lower extremities where blood clots may form called deep venous thrombosis (dvt). A clot breaking off from the DVT can move (embolize) through the blood stream creating what's known as an embolism. Can be life threatening and result in sudden death.
