In brief: Both are safe

Vascular lesions in the carotid arteries increase stroke risk.
Both stents and endarterectomy or lesion removal are safe and effective procedures to lower your stroke risk. Each procedure also carries a small risk of stroke during procedure. Your providers results should be available to you, and may help you decide.

In brief: You have a choice

Recent large trials show stents and surgery to be close to equal.
Some patients are better suited to one or the other. The experience of the doctor performing the procedure is very important. Get a second opinion before you decide.

In brief: Depends

The gold standard is carotid endarterectomy cea but mutiple studies shows that stenting is not inferior to cea.
Mutiple factors plays role in outcome including symptomatic patients where cea is better , age of the patient where cea is better in 80 years and older. People with previous cea , people with high risk disease like severe coronary artery disease or bad lungs better have stenting.

In brief: Depends

On many factors. Type of plaque, patient age, plaque on other side, previous neck surgery or radiation.
Experience of doctor. I have been placing carotid stents since 1999. Very low stroke rate. Make sure your doc uses distal protection device.
