Sore throat coughing up phlegm and blood?

Need more info. My recommendation would be to see a doctor asap since coughing up blood never has a benign cause. On the other hand it would be helpful to know how long you have been ill, to whom you were exposed, whether you smoke, have fever, chills, nausea, shortness of breath, etc. Make a list of everything and take it with you to the doctor. Sometime I find blood in my phlegm, I'm sure it's not from my gums. I don't cough or have sore throat, I don't smoke either. Should I be worry?

Yes. Bleeding is one of your body's ways of telling you that there's a serious problem. Have you seen a Periodontist, a gum specialist, to rule out gum disease? If do you need to see a Pulmonologist and an ENT. Please do not delay. Read more...

Why am I spitting up blood and phlegm if I only have sore throat?

See a doctor. Sore throat and bleeding needs to be seen by a doctor. An otolaryngologist (ENT) can easily look in your throat to see where it might be coming from. The flexible scope is very easy to tolerate with local anesthetic. I have had it done many times to teach med students how to do it. It is usually nothing serious--bronchitis, nose bleed, etc. But you need to be sure. Read more...

Hi, I have a slight cold a bit of a snuffly nose but no sore throat or cough, I just brought up phlegm and there is blood in it? Streaks of blood?

Epistaxis. Bleeding from the nose due to superficial irritation associated with viral URI may occur, and its dripping from the rear of the nose into the nasopharynx may produce small amts of blood in phlegm. If, however, this gets worse or persists beyond the time that the cold clears you should go and be seen by a doctor. Wish you better soon. Read more...

Hi, bringing up dark yellow phlegm with bright red blood streaks, no cough, no sore throat, no blocked nose. Should I be concerned?

Bronchitis. Blood tinged mucus or sputum is often due to an infection in sinus or lungs. Many of us treat, unless bloody nose from blowing too much. Most of us will treat with antibiotics if it happens for more than 3 days. There are other causes, too, but it's a GREAT idea to get checked soon. In the meantime, avoid otc cough and cold meds, and fragrances and aerosols (which don't help, can make worse) Read more...
Bronchitis. No, don't worry. You are describing symptoms of bronchitis which we would expect to settle on it's own without the need for antibiotics. Only worry if you start to get short of breath or the amount of blood increases or if you continue coughing sputum & blood for longer than a few weeks. Read more...
