Spirometry measures how well & how quickly you can fill & empty your lungs.
When asthma is present you may not be able to empty your lungs as fast as usual. This is easily recorded using a spirometer. After the initial test you are given a bronchodilator & the test is repeated. An improvement of 12% of more is considered evidence of "reversible bronchospasm" and consistent with asthma.
