Taping is not for recent injuries.
It is for old injuries to help prevent re-injury. Taping is too tight and dangerous in the early post-injury stages. Ace wraps are elastic and can accommodate some swelling. Right after injury you are trying to reduce swelling, not cut off blood flow. Use and ace wrap until the swelling is resolved, then start taping for return to sports.

Taping can provide compression to decrease swelling as well as support a weaker joint. The extra skin sensation also gives feedback to the brain to help it know where the ankle is in space so that muscles can be recruited more quickly to help protect it prior to another sprain. The effect of taping is lost after 20-30 min of sports.
