In brief: Reaction

Contact dermatitis is where something is touching the skin and causing a reaction or rash to the skin.
The contact can be some type of lotion, cream, etc; can be food (like when tomato sauce is around the mouth causing redness). Even poison ivy is a contact dermatitis. Steroid creams usually are needed to reduce the inflammation.

In brief: Skin rash

Contact dermatitis is an allergic skin rash caused by something touching the skin that the child is allergic or sensitive to.
Examples might include lotions, fabric softeners, & certain fabrics like wool. In older children nickle (in earrings and metal snaps) can cause a very localized contact dermatitis. The rash associated with poison ivy is one of the more severe forms of contact dermatitis.
