Sometimes, in an attempt to remove a painful and embedded margin of the nail, the adjacent soft tissue becomes infected - as seen in the photo....
Soak in epsom salt and clease the digit thoroughly....
Use an antibiotic cream and apply a dry bandage.
If the condition worsen, see a board certified podiatrist.....
