In brief: Berlin patient

Yes it can cure HIV.
However after the Berlin patient we had difficulty with other cases. Work is on going. Certain cords with a particular mutation are naturally resistant to hiv. Can we potentially do a haplo cord. Where cord takes over and cures the patient, possibly. Still being investigated

In brief: Someday....

There is currently an area of exciting research.
Our institution (and others) are currently investigating whether using genetically modified stem cells in a transplant setting could cure someone of hiv. See: http://www.Fhcrc.Org/en/news/center-news/2011/07/jerome-kiem-hiv.Html.
