Primary care doctors usually measure bone density
with a dexa (dxa) scan, which is an x-ray study that takes measurements from a person's spine and femur (hip bone).
Calculations and results are sent to the doctor. A patient returns to his or her doctor to discuss the meaning of the results which depend on gender, age, body type (big-boned vs. Petite), other medical conditions, medications, etc...
