In brief: Renal artery stenose

52 F asks prognosis of RAS.
ANS: I specialize in this for over 50 years. A complex question that deserves a 2nd opinion from me. Depends on cause, prior treatment, other problems but almost all can be managed today by BP meds.

Radiology - Interventional

In brief: Good

Medical management until stent needed.
Don't go to stent too early. May not need stent if kidney already damaged.

Prognosis related to cause of RAS: if atherosclerotic then prognosis related to associated carotid, coronary, visceral and extremity arterial disease. Monitoring these and controlling risk factors can improve prognosis. If fibromuscular disease, prognosis good. RAS tends to be bilateral and can progress even to occlusion regardless of underlying cause.
