In brief: Educational track

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who after completing their graduate courses specialize in the field of psychiatry.
Being physicians they are licensed to precribe medications. Psychologists on the other hand studied normal psychology and psychological disorders in a non medical domain. In the usa psychologist can treat mental illness but are not licensed to prescribe medications.

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine specializing in the evaluation and treatment of mental disorders.
Psychiatrists use the medical model to evaluate patients and provide treatment which may include both psychotherapy and medication. Psychology is an academic field which focuses on the study of the mind. Clinical psychologists may administer tests and provide psychotherapy.

In brief: Iatry vs. ology -

Psychiatrists are physicians first, and then specialize in their field by becoming board certified.
They can prescribe medication. Psychologists have a doctoral degree in psychology and specialize in psychotherapy, testing (and other areas) but cannot prescribe medication - yet.

In brief: Therapy vs meds

Speaking very generally, most psychologists hold either a PhD or a PsyD degree (I hold both) and practice psychotherapy.
Psychiatrists hold either an MD or a DO degree, and they prescribe psychotropic medications, and generally do not do all that much therapy these days, but years ago psychiatrists would do both.
