In brief: See Time magazine

I think you'll find your answers best addressed by a well-researched article this week in time magazine about sleep disorders, nightmares, and post-traumatic stress.
I recommend after reviewing the article that you ask your phyisician to direct you to the local sleep medicine specialist who can provide diagnostic and therapeutic options.

In brief: This can be a really

Tough symptom to treat.
One way to address the sleep disturbance is by treating the ptsd - think cognitive processing therapy, emdr, virtual reality exposure therapy, ssri's, psychotherapy & psychoeducation. Use excellent sleep hygiene. Melatonin and prazosin are particularly good. If sleep doesn't respond consider seeing a sleep medicine specialist and obtaining a polysomnogram.
