Hi. I have thallesemia minor. I just want to ask is there any remedy to treat anemia.? My hb is 10 nd am so pale..

Thalassemia minor. You will have some degree of anemia that is related to the thalassemia minor. You should discuss this with your doctor so your doctor can do some blood work to check your iron and vitamin levels. Some breaking down of red blood cells happen in thalassemia- and your body would need to keep your iron and vit b12, folate (folic acid) in good level so that your body can keep up with the hemolysis. Not likely. Hemoglobin values of 9.5 to 11 are considered normal for a patient with beta thalassemia trait (minor). There is no good way to increase that value, just as there is no way to make me taller. It is very important that you not use iron in an attempt to make your hemoglobin higher, unless you are found to be iron deficient by a doctor. Read more...

I have symptoms of anemia only when on my period. Lightheaded, pale, etc. Do I need to be diagnosed or should I just treat myself with iron supplement?

Not an "iron(y)" It is always better to know if that is what needs treating before any form of treatment. Have your MD perform a complete blood count(cbc) with differential. Of course over the counter iron is available, but if you start it now, it will "confuse" a future diagnosis from testing. Moreover, the MD will give you an iron Rx that will be more effective then the "store" version if it is necessary. Read more...
