In brief: Optic nerve disease
Glaucoma as defined by The American Academy of Ophthalmology is “a group of diseases with certain features including an intraocular pressure that is too high for the continued health of the eye.
” It is very serious and is often free of symptoms until late in the disease. There tends to be a familial tendency and is more common in African Americans & the elderly.

In brief: Optic neuropathy
Glaucoma is a condition where optic nerve damage occurs and is usually associated with elevated eye pressure.
It is also associated with a thin cornea, family history, black race, increased optic nerve cupping and myopia. Some forms of glaucoma can occur with normal pressure and these cases can sometimes be the most serious. Most glaucoma can be treated adequately to prevent serious visual loss.

In brief: Eye pressure too hig
Glaucoma is condition in which the internal eye pressure is higher than the vessels and nerves at the back of the eye can withstand.
There are many types and causes. The most common termed 'open angle' has no known cause. Effective treatment is available including eyedrops, laser and surgery. You should be followed by an ophthalmologist because failure to treat can cause loss of vision.

Vision, typically in the periphery first, and eventually leading to blindness if untreated.
