If I go to the hospital how will they determine if I have a DVT or not?

In brief: Ultrasound

The first test used to determine if a significant deep venous thrombosis is present is an ultrasound test of your lower extremities.
Blood tests for "d-dimer" can also give an indication of too much clotting in your veins. The "gold standard" test, injecting die in the veins to take x-rays of the veins (venogram) is done less often, because it carries a small risk of causing dvt.

In brief: Lab test and US

Best way to rule out a DVT is a duplex ultrasound of the vessels of your affected extremity.
A d dimer test can identify breakdown products of a clot and can help eliminate the need for an ultrasound.

In brief: Venous Doppler.

The physical examination of the leg is notoriously inaccurate for the diagnosis if DVT.
In the appropriate clinical setting (immobilization, recent surgery), a venous Doppler would be the necessary test.
