Increased skin pigmentation in individuals with ai is due to increased acth production which in turn activates the production of melanin by the pigment cells (called melanocytes) in the skin via melancyte stimulating hormone (msh).
Keep in mind that hyperpigmentation is not noted in patients with secondary or central adrenal insufficiency due to lack of acth elevation.
