In brief: Generic Desyrel (trazodone)
Trazodone (desyrel) is an antidepressant approved by the fda in 1981, and which more recently was approved in an extended release formulation.
Like prozac, (fluoxetine) it blocks reuptake of serotonin -- but not as potently as Prozac (fluoxetine) does. It has more anti-anxiety and sedating qualities to it, leading many to prescribe low doses of it for sleep.
