It really depends on the degree of renal impairment.
Most people with moderate chronic kidney disease do not even realize they have the disease! its often not until renal function had dropped below 30% and often lower than that, that you can see side effects. The side effects (anemia, high potassium, high phosphorus) are what cause most of the life threatening issues.
