In brief: Help breath
Pleurodesis is used to prevent recurrence of air (pneumothorax) or fluid (effusion) in chest cavity.
When pneumothorax or effusion occur, they occupy space where lung should be. This prevents the lung from fully expanding. Pleurodesis is used to improve /maintain lung expansion, and maintain breathing. Modern thoracic surgeons will use vats (minimally invasive techniques).

In brief: Normal
Pleurodesis surgery is a procedure to help fuse portions of the lung to the chest wall, and thus preventing abnormal fluid from forming around the lung.
The abnormal fluid stops forming, depending on its cause, and your other normal body fluids continue to do the right thing.
