In brief: Thinning mucus
Dornase alfa, called "pulmozyme", breaks down dna which is part of the material in thck chest mucus in patients with chronic lung disease such as cystic fibrosis.
The medicine thins the mucus and makes it easier to cough out. It is used every day for months or years and gets into the lungs by inhaling the medicine in a mist. Treatments take 10-20 minutes. It's not used for colds or bronchitis.
