Do you recommend we wear a thigh high or pantyhose compression garment for long trip?

In brief: Neither
Compression or support hose help the muscle pumps recirculate blood flow and fluids out of the leg, these muscle pumps are the muscles of the forefoot and calf.
Therefore in most cases calf hi stockings are enough. One exception would be a pregnant woman best served by maternity pantyhose to uplift the lower abdomen and reduce pressure on the leg veins.

In brief: Pantyhose
You will get better, more even compression with pantyhose and avoid a band of tightness around your midthigh.
But if you can't do that then any compression is better than none. Safe travels.

In brief: Before and after
Your legs will begin to swell as soon as you the plane reaches cruising altitude and even before that as the cabin is pressurized.
Putting your stockings on after that is futile. Therefore i always tell my patients to put them on before leaving your home for the airport and don't take them off until you are settled into your final destination. Drink plenty of water and walk while in the air.
