If artefill is permanent, then how come it only lasts 18 months and not forever?

In brief: Artefill permanence
Artefill contains two components - collagen and small nondissolvable beads.
These tiny beads stay in the skin and provide a sort of scaffold for collagen. The fact that we continue to age is what makes artefill seem like it does not last as long. There is a continuous breakdown of collagen and loss of fat during the aging process. The beads are about 20% of the volume of the injected material.

In brief: Artefill permanent?
Only about 30 to 40 % of the composition of artefill is a permanent compound.
The majority of the material that is injected and gives you a fill effect will disappear in a few months.

In brief: "Duration" varies
Artefill has two components - pmma (polymethlymethacrylate) microspheres (permanent) and bovine collagen (temporary).
The bovine collagen component will gradually dissipate but the tissue also responds to the presence of the pmma microspheres by building collagen. Long-term improvement (duration of effect) depends on the effectiveness of the collagen building process but also other factors...
