Rarely (<2%) maternal VZV infection during pregnancy (chickenpox or herpes zoster) can cause the following severe fetal syndrome: microcephaly, neurodevelopmental delay, microphthalmia, cataracts, nystagmus, optic nerve atrophy, chorioretinitis, atrophic limbs, limd reduction defects, poor fetal growth, skin lesions, gastrointestinal stenosis/atresia.
