Trifluoperazine - can it treat bipolar patients?

Yes. Trifluoperazine is an antipsychotic that can be used to treat bipolar disorder especially when there are psychotic symptoms present or when it is added to a mood stabilizer like lithium. Newer medications are available that seem to be better tolerated.
Stelazine. Stelazine (Trifluoperazine) is a first-generation antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia. It would not be my first choice to treat a bipolar patient with psychotic features. An atypical antipsychotic would be perferrable.
