In brief: Get a lesson

Ask your doctor if they can teach you or refer you to a diabetic educator. Another option is going to the pharmacy and get training.
Another option is go to utube and watch videos. Practice on a tomato first. Good luck.

In brief: It's a quick process

There are many commercially available blood glucose meters on the market.
Get one at your local pharmacy.Read the directions. Most have a spring-loaded lancing device.Got a drop of blood from the side of one of your fingertips (after washing and drying your hands). Touch the drop to the tip of the strip in the meter (for most meters) .The value will be displayed in a few seconds. Remove the strip.
