Also, make sure your bicycle is in good mechanical condition and you have adequate lights and reflectors. If possible get a bicycle fitting (some bike shops and physical therapists are trained). Use a bicycle appropriate for the kind of riding you do and the terrain. Map out your route using area bike maps if available and do a trial run before your first commute.
