In brief: Beyond recovery
Strenuous exercise while encouraging muscle strength and flexilibity, also does some damage which is usually short term and needs recovery.
If you overtrain, the soreness can persist and severe overtraining can cause breakdown (myolysis) which can cause kidney disease. This happens high school athletics all too often and some deaths have been reported. Exercise in moderation.
