In brief: Got Tofu?
The soy based protein sources are good, but other beans, are great too.
Chick peas in felafel and hummus are a great staple. Lentils and rice form the basis of the traditional nepali diet. Nuts like almonds have some protein, as do the grains. Quinoa is a super-food. Many alternatives exist to enslaving and killing other species for food, poisoning the environment and ruining our own health.

In brief: Animal Fat & Protein
I encourage families to include animal fat and protein in their diet, as traditional societies around the world.
A well-balanced (fat/protein/carbs) nutritionally packed vegan/vegetarian diet is possible, but less probable - especially for children. http://getrealforkids.com/resources/real-food/balanced-meals-snacks/1987-secrets-of-a-balanced-meal#.

Unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, are willing to supplement heavily, and can recognize shameless lies for what they are, don't be a vegan or a vegetarian. These diets ruin people's and families' health every day, though in different ways from the junk/obesogenic diet.
