In brief: Similar to analog

Taking the mammogram is about the same.
Processing is done differently. It is done digitally rather than by processing films. The digital images have better quality. They are seen immediately on the monitor and they can be manipulated digitally for better exposure, enlargement, and other enhancements.

In brief: Mammo

An analogous situation is the difference between your digital camera and a traditional camera that requires film. The old camera needs to have film loaded, exposed, removed, and developed.
The hard copy photo comes out the way it comes out, maybe too bright or too dark, and you are stuck with it.Digitally, the image is produced from electronic detectors, and can be viewed and optimized on a computer.
