In brief: Different treatments
Systemic lupus can be a very severe disease, especially in children.
Plaquenil alone may be sufficient to help prevent flares of disease once it is in remission, but to put it into remission almost always involves oral ;/or IV steroids.Depending on organs affected (kidney ; brain disease most severe), patients may need methotrexate, Rituximab (biologic), cytoxan, cellcept, (mycophenolate mofetil) Imuran or a combo of these.

In brief: Varies
Mild lupus can be treated with supportive measures only (such as protection from the sun, smoking cessation, etc.
) but most patients take plaquenil, an anti malarial drug, for its protective effects. More severe lupus is treated with immunosuppressive drugs ranging from oral Methotrexate or Cyclophosphamide to an infusable drug, benlysta (belimumab). Many new drugs are in development.
