For the past year or so, most of the time I smell burning wood -- so much so I have actually gone searching for the fires in the house -- thoughts! ...?

Nasal/sinus issues. I would advise an ENT (meat, nose and throat) work up. Chronic sinus infection is well known to cause abnormal smell. Of course we always worry about a brain cause. Either way- see your md for evaluation and decide which way to go - neuro or ENT as a starting point. Good luck!
