Should I get treated for hypothyroidism if TSH levels are 3.96 and symptoms are present?

In brief: May be worth at try.
This is likely a high normal or even slightly above-normal result wtih some assays.
Ask your doctor for an anti-thyroid antibody level. If elevated, i would definitely recommend treatment. If not elevated, a low-dose trial of T4 for a few months (aim for TSH around 1.0) may still be a good idea if you are having hypothyroid symptoms. It can be discontinued later if symptoms do not improve.
