In brief: Depends on type
Candida/yeast is creamy white, tends to occur in skin folds, groin, under breasts.
Tinea versicolor doesn't tan, has irregular borders, slightly scaly edges. Tinea corporis/ringworm starts as red spot that grows outward in ring shape; edge is raised, scaly; center appears normal. Vitiligo (not a fungus) is patches of hypopigmentation. Skin scraping & test for fungus by doc can be a start.

In brief: Fungal infection
Fungal infections often develop in dark moist areas of the body such as the groin area and under the arms and breasts.
He can try an over the counter anti-fungal treatment for a few days but if the rash doesn't improve, he needs to see a doctor.
