Does anyone know if speech/language impairment is a disability that can be improved?

In brief: Yes
Many people can be aided by a speech/language pathologist, who can evaluate and help to improve speech patterns, enunciation and oral communication in general.

In brief: Specific language
impairment is a delay in mastering language in a child with no hearing loss or neurodevelopmental disorder. SLI includes deficits in vocabulary, syntax, grammar, phonological awareness & conversational skills, but not articulation.
There is often a family history of SLI. The risk of dyslexia is 40-70%. Early, intensive language therapy & a language-enriched home environment help minimize impact.

If speech, the motor aspect of language, is delayed, it is diagnosed as Developmental Articulation Disorder. It is treated by a Speech/Language Pathologist, as well. A child who has both SLI, or Receptive &/or Expressive Language Disorder & Developmental Articulation Disorder may have other areas of delay, like fine motor, self-help,etc. A child with SLI has typical development otherwise.
