Probiotics and IBD. One of the different theories about the mechanism of disease in ibd is the interaction of the gut flora and the lining of the bowel. There are instances on which the bowel flora could make the inflammation worse and probiotics may be able to modifiy the flora and decrease the inflammation.
VERY LITTLE. Anecdotal evidence. Large prospective studies are lacking support so far, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try if all else fails?
Maybe. There is decent evidence that probiotics can help with ulcerative colitis and excellent evidence that it can help with patients after colectomy when they only have a surgical pouch left over. In Crohn's disease, the data do not support their use.
