Looking for information on B12 and folate (folic acid) deficiency in vegetarians?

B12 deficient common. Being vegetarian may reduce risk of folate (folic acid) deficiency, as the best sources of folate (folic acid) are dark leafy greens, lentils, beans, broccoli & asparagus. However, fruits & vegies generally don't contain b12, so vegetarians are at risk of B12 deficiency.Eggs and dairy products do have b12, but even vegetarians who eat those average less than half the rda of b12. B12 supplements are thus advised. See comment:. Read more...

How fast do folate (folic acid) levels change? Previous deficient, went from 12 to 8 ug/L in a month, does serum folate (folic acid) fluctuate or have any diurnal variations?

Serum folate (folic acid)... ...levels, to the best of my knowledge, don't have a diurnal variation. However, since we're measuring serum (as opposed to Red Blood Cell) levels, they can increase fairly quickly with either dietary intake of folate (folic acid) rich foods or supplements. They decrease more slowly if you're becoming depleted. Both of these levels are within normal range. Read more...

What would cause folate (folic acid) deficiency in an 18 y/o male?

Inadequate diet. This is caused by not eating enough foods rich in folate: dark leafy greens (spinach), beans & lentils, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. You can also obtain folate from supplements, though most supps have folic acid, a synthetic form you need to convert to folate. 1/3 of people can't make that conversion & thus should take l-5-mthf. Can severe folate (folic acid) deficiency make me feel weird like "i'm dying" everyday?

Very Unlikely, Rare. Like all vitamins, Folic Acid is absorbed from many foods (e.g. See: sources: http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/folic_acid), deficiency is rare & always due to very unusual situations maintained over long periods of time. Symptoms are only clues as to their complex origin & limiting thinking to only a single molecule/body mechanic approach (though commonly promoted), is rarely wise or productive. Read more...
Folate (folic acid) & depression. Severe folate (folic acid) deficiency may contribute to depression, which can make you feel weird. Feeling like you're dying everyday is a bit extreme for this, though. Having ongoing thoughts about dying can relate to depression -- for which there is effective treatment. L-methyl folate (folic acid) (if needed) may help, but won't be sufficient on its own for relief. Please see your doctor for evaluation. Read more...

Why is fetus at risk if folate (folic acid) deficiency?

Folate (folic acid) Folate is a co-factor used in cellular division. If there is a deficiency of folic acid, cells won't be able to divide properly. The net result is fewer cells. In a developing human this is associated with neural tube defects and cardiac defects. Read more...
