I have some facial muscle weakness. Brain MRI about a year ago showed nothing. Was told it was anxiety. Could that be the only cause? I fear als.

Doubt ALS. Weak facial muscles are associated with a few hereditary muscle diseases (e.g., fsh), but can be due to problems with cranial nerves, such as facial or trigeminal, and problems outside cranial cavity may not be seen on standard brain mri. Very unlikely that you have als, but if you need more information, a facial nerve EMG might be of some value. Read more...

When a nerve in the face is damaged (not severed) does muscle weakness slowly get better or spontaneously work as the nerve heals?

Expect this. If the nerve coverings are the source of damage, it will take about 4 weeks, but if the central axonal core is affected, recovery speed is similar to fingernail growth, about 0.1 mm per day. Your surgeon can help explain this process. Read more...

Can an untreated swollen spinal cord cause same symptoms as multiple sclerosis and if so can the nerve damage and muscle weakness be made better?

Spinal cord. Weakness, numbness, balance problems and bladder control disorder can all occur from spinal cord conditions like transverse myelitis, compressive myelopathy, and multiple sclerosis. In some cases, rapid use of steroids or removal of the offending condition may result in recovery of muscle strength and nerve cell function. However, some conditions can cause severe deficits hard to recover from. Read more...
Perhaps. Spinal cord swelling can be secondary to variety of causes, such as neuromyelitis optica, trauma, MS, tumors, and could cause localized symptoms indistinguishable from your MS. (Have you had an anti-aquaporin 4 test?) Typically might treat with steroids, but this would make your diabetes temporarily worse. Acthar might create a lesser complication. Check for NMO prior to starting MS med. Read more...
