Is mupirocin ointment effective by itself to treat an infected cartilage piercing?

Possibly, but seldom. If this organism is staph aureus this may be somewhat effective, but if you do not begin to clear up rapidly would seek further advice. Read more...

Saw a doc for red, puffy, infected nostril. He prescribed Bactroban (mupirocin) ointment. Is this standard of care, or should I be taking oral antibiotic too?

Vestibulitis. Greetings. Great question. Personally, I recommend the same treatment for an infected nostril area. The topical ointment soothes sore membranes and kills the Staph bacteria that is most commonly responsible for this problem. IF the symptoms don't improve after 5 days of treatment, then I usually will prescribe an oral antibiotic like Cefadroxil. I hope this helps. You can consult me if needed. Read more...
